Definition
Cognitive load is the amount of mental work your brain must handle at once. Reading, comparing, remembering, and deciding all create load.
When the load is manageable, learning and focus are possible. When it is too high, even simple tasks can feel strangely difficult.
Three Types
| Type | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Intrinsic load | The natural difficulty of the task. |
| Extraneous load | Friction caused by unclear explanations, messy interfaces, or distracting environments. |
| Germane load | Useful effort that helps understanding become deeper. |
Why It Matters
When studying or working feels impossible, the problem is not always ability. Sometimes the system is carrying too much unnecessary load.
Notes, checklists, smaller steps, and fewer choices can reduce cognitive load.
