Definition
Self-compassion is the capacity to meet failure, shame, or pain with awareness of human limitation and the possibility of repair.
It is not the same as making excuses. It is a way of taking responsibility without destroying the person who must take it.
Three Components
| Component | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Self-kindness | Speaking realistically instead of insulting yourself. |
| Common humanity | Remembering that pain and failure are not yours alone. |
| Mindfulness | Noticing feelings without exaggerating or denying them. |
Difference From Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is often tied to a positive evaluation of the self. Self-compassion is the attitude of not abandoning yourself when that evaluation drops.
During failure or recovery, self-compassion can be a more stable base than self-esteem alone.
