Meaning and Origin

Sanggang means “frost (霜) descends (降),” and it is the final solar term of autumn. Nighttime temperatures fall close to freezing, the first frost appears, and autumn foliage reaches its peak.

Customs and Foods

This was the time to hurry through the last stage of the late-autumn harvest and begin preparing for winter. Because chrysanthemums were at their final and brightest moment of the year, autumn foliage outings and chrysanthemum viewing also reached their height.

Saju and the Solar Terms

Sanggang is a middle qi (中氣), marking the middle of the lunar month. In myeongli, the boundary of the month pillar (月柱) is based on the 12 seasonal nodes (節), while the middle qi is read as the point when that month’s energy becomes most concentrated.

Wisdom for This Time

Some things must be gathered before the frost descends — now is a good time to list the work you need to finish before the year ends.

The solar terms are a seasonal calendar that divides the Sun’s path into 24 parts. This is a traditional explanation based on the climate of the Korean Peninsula, and the actual date may vary by about a day from year to year.
