Meaning and origin
Baekro means “white (白) dew (露).” It is the solar term when nighttime temperatures begin to fall and dew starts forming on blades of grass. This is when the feeling of autumn becomes unmistakable.
Customs and foods
The period from Baekro until around Chuseok was called “podosunjeol (葡萄旬節),” and was considered the time when grapes tasted best. Around this time, people also judged the coming harvest by looking at how the rice ears were filling out.
Saju and the solar term
The calendar used in myeongli, or Four Pillars study, moves by solar terms. Baekro is one of the 12 solar term nodes (節), and from this day, the month pillar (月柱) in saju changes to Yu (酉) month. This is why the sexagenary branch of a birth month is determined by the solar term, not by the lunar calendar date.
