Definition
An implementation intention turns a vague goal into a specific action plan: when, where, and what you will do.
The classic format is: “If situation X happens, then I will do action Y.”
Examples
| Vague goal | Implementation intention |
|---|---|
| I should exercise | At 8 p.m., I will put on my shoes and walk for five minutes. |
| I should study | After lunch, I will sit at my desk and solve one problem. |
| I should use my phone less | When I get into bed, I will leave my phone on the desk. |
Why It Works
Implementation intentions reduce the need to decide again in the moment. By linking a situational cue to a behavior beforehand, the action can run more automatically.
This is especially helpful when decision fatigue or starting resistance is high.
