Habit Loop: How Cue, Action, and Reward Create Repetition

Definition
A habit loop is a repeating structure where a cue invites an action, and the reward after the action makes the pattern more likely to happen again.
Helpful and unhelpful habits both use this structure. That is why changing cues and rewards often works better than relying on willpower alone.
Three Elements
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Cue | The time, place, emotion, person, or previous action that starts the behavior. |
| Action | The repeated choice or movement itself. |
| Reward | The relief, stimulation, satisfaction, or meaning that follows the action. |
How to Change It
To change a habit, reduce the cue, place a smaller replacement action, and make the reward visible as quickly as possible.
For example, “after work, sit on the sofa and scroll” can become “after work, drink water and tidy for three minutes.”
