Definition
Emotion regulation is the ability to notice, name, adjust, and express emotions such as anger, anxiety, sadness, or joy.
It does not mean deleting emotions. It means creating enough space so a feeling does not automatically control every action.
Core Elements
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Awareness | Recognizing what emotion is present. |
| Intensity control | Slowing down when a feeling becomes too strong. |
| Expression choice | Choosing speech, silence, distance, or a request. |
| Recovery | Returning to daily rhythm after an emotional event. |
Difference From Suppression
Suppression denies or pushes away what is being felt. Regulation acknowledges the emotion while managing how it affects relationships and decisions.
Suppression can look calm in the short term, but it may lead to fatigue, sudden outbursts, or avoidance over time.
