Personality Test Glossary — Big Five, MBTI & DISC
When reading personality test results, terms like ‘Openness’, ‘Neuroticism’, or ‘DISC’ can trip you up. Here are the core terms you need, in one place. A personality test is a reference tool for self-understanding, not a way to reduce a person to a single type.
Big Five (OCEAN)
The most widely researched model of personality, viewing it as five continuous dimensions.
| Factor | Core |
|---|---|
| Openness | Curiosity about new experiences, ideas, and art |
| Conscientiousness | Planning, self-control, responsibility |
| Extraversion | Sociability, activity, stimulation-seeking |
| Agreeableness | Cooperation, empathy, trust |
| Neuroticism | Sensitivity to anxiety (lower = more stable) |
MBTI Four Dimensions
- Extraversion (E)–Introversion (I): direction of energy.
- Sensing (S)–Intuition (N): how information is gathered.
- Thinking (T)–Feeling (F): basis for decisions.
- Judging (J)–Perceiving (P): lifestyle.
DISC Four Types
- Dominance (D): results-driven, challenging.
- Influence (I): people-oriented, persuasive.
- Steadiness (S): cooperative, patient, stable.
- Conscientiousness (C): accurate, analytical, rule-oriented.
DISC is a commercial behavioral tool that lacks independent peer review and should not be the sole basis for hiring or clinical decisions.
Basics for Reading Tests
- Temperament: the innate emotional/reactive foundation on which personality forms.
- Personality trait: patterns of behavior and thought that recur across situations.
- Reliability: how consistently a test yields the same result.
- Validity: how well a test measures what it intends to.
Knowing the terms helps you read results more even-handedly. A result is not a verdict — it is a starting point for self-understanding.
