How to Cancel Insurance in Korea — Refunds, Surrender Value & What Not to Cancel
Many people assume they’ll get their premiums back when canceling insurance — but in most cases, you’ll receive significantly less than what you paid. Here’s what you need to know before making any cancellation decision.
Before Canceling — Check These Things First
1. Are You Still Within the Free-Look Period?
If you’re within 15 days of the policy start date (free-look period), you can get a full refund of all premiums paid — no questions asked. This is a policy cancellation, not a “surrender” and carries no financial penalty.
- How to use it: Call the insurer’s customer service line or cancel through their app/website
- Deadline: 15 days from the contract date, OR 15 days from when you received the policy documents — whichever is later
2. What Is Your Surrender Value?
Once the free-look period has passed, cancellation pays you the surrender value (해지환급금) — which is typically far less than your total premiums paid. The earlier you cancel, the bigger the loss:
- To check: Your policy certificate includes a surrender value table / or call the insurer directly
- Most policies lose heavily in the first 1–3 years
3. Canceling Silson (Health) Insurance Creates a Re-Entry Problem
Especially for 1st and 2nd generation silson policies: once canceled, you can only re-enroll in the current 4th generation plan, which has much higher out-of-pocket costs and more restrictions. Strongly recommended to get an independent consultation before canceling any health insurance.
Cancellation Rules by Policy Type
Silson Medical Insurance (실손)
- After canceling, only 4th gen policies are available for re-enrollment — self-pay ratios are higher
- 1st and 2nd gen silson: do not cancel unless absolutely necessary
- If cost is the issue: consider premium deferral or coverage reduction options instead
Life Insurance (Whole Life / Term)
- Canceling in years 1–2 typically returns only 30–70% of premiums paid
- After 7–10 years, the surrender value approaches your total paid premiums
- Alternatives to consider: automatic premium loan (the policy loans itself its own value to pay premiums), or paid-up conversion (reduce coverage and stop paying premiums without canceling)
Auto Insurance
- Canceling mid-term: You receive a refund of remaining unused premium, calculated using short-rate tables — the later you cancel, the less you recover
- When selling your car: cancel the insurance after the new owner has their own coverage in place
- Switching insurers: time the new policy to start on the same day the old one ends
How to Cancel
① Phone Cancellation
- Call the insurer’s main customer service number
- Identity verification required
- Note: Some insurers require in-person or written cancellation for certain policy types — confirm first
② Online / App Cancellation
- Log in with your digital certificate or mobile ID verification
- Navigate to: Cancel Policy → Review Surrender Value → Confirm
- Refund to your registered bank account within 3–5 business days
③ In-Person Branch Visit
- Required for complex policies (group insurance, retirement pensions, etc.)
- Bring your national ID
④ Written (Mail/Fax) Cancellation
- Some insurers still require a signed cancellation form sent by post or fax
- Cancellation date is typically set to the date of submission
Surrender Value Examples
| Scenario | Monthly Premium | Total Paid | Surrender Value (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel after 1 year | ₩100,000 | ₩1,200,000 | ₩300,000–₩600,000 |
| Cancel after 5 years | ₩100,000 | ₩6,000,000 | ₩3,500,000–₩5,000,000 |
| Cancel after 10 years | ₩100,000 | ₩12,000,000 | ₩9,000,000–₩11,000,000 |
Actual values vary significantly by product, insurer, and individual policy terms. Always verify directly with your insurer.
Alternatives to Cancellation
| Situation | Better Alternative |
|---|---|
| Premium is too expensive | Premium deferral, coverage reduction, or automatic premium loan |
| Overlapping coverage | Identify which policy is less favorable and cancel only that one |
| Need immediate cash | Policy loan (약관대출) — borrow 50–95% of your surrender value without canceling |
| Silson self-pay too high | Ask about special clause modifications to reduce the premium |
